About this event

This talk is aimed at all Freemasons, and especially those who have not taken the Royal Ark Mariner degree.

The purpose is to provide some core information, stimulate curiosity, generate interest and help brethren consider whether the degree might feature – at some point – in their Masonic journey.

In the talk I explain some of the rather visible aspects of this very colourful degree in Freemasonry, then I venture behind the visible to the symbolic and meaningful. I outline something of the origins and history of the degree and then bring us up to date with a description of the degree today.

The Q&A session that follows the talk will concentrate on the needs of the target audience and will address their requests for clarification or more information. Experienced members of the Fraternity are encouraged to attend but they are asked to give priority to the questions posed by newly Elevated brethren and those who have not taken the degree.

W Bro. Tony Harvey has held active roles in the membership, mentoring, secretarial, learning & development, charity and communication areas of Freemasonry.

Tony conceived, and between 2015 and 2020 was the main author of, the Members’ Pathway (see https://b.ugle.org.uk/membership). In June 2019, UGLE’s Pro Grand Master described the Pathway as a “game changer.” In February 2020, one of Freemasonry’s most respected social media influencers called it “one of the greatest innovations to Freemasonry in the last 100 years”. Lodges that have used the Members' Pathway report new optimism about the future, a growth in members and improved retention.

Tony has held a number of Masonic lectureships, including the Prestonian Lecture in 2012 with, “Scouting and Freemasonry: two parallel organisations?”, and has delivered talks in every Province in England & Wales, in a number of UGLE's overseas Districts and in Lodges in other jurisdictions around the world.

Tony's talks and articles combine historical analysis with an understanding of organisational development to promote a forward-thinking approach to Freemasonry, based on the evolution of our Lodge practices while retaining our fundamental meaning and purpose.

Tony is a grand officer in the Craft, Royal Arch and Mark and in two other Orders within English Freemasonry. He is currently the Provincial Membership Officer in Nottinghamshire and the Head of Learning & Development in West Kent.

Professionally, he is a coach, speaker and consultant specialising in leadership, change and organisational development. His published books and articles focus on his own model of personal and organisational change, the Success Cycle.
